Here's a straight forward "How-to" for fellow AE86/4AGE die-hards wanting to use a factory 4AG distributor with their stand-alone in a sequential injection/ignition setup.
If you have a JDM ESA (Electronic Spark Advance) distributor it will usually have a 24-tooth and 4-tooth trigger wheel inside:
(Toyota 4AGEU 3-wire ESA Distributor)
If your standalone unit requires you to remove all but 1 from the 4-tooth trigger wheel but your "purist" soul (心 - kokoro) won't let you do so, don't despair - here's a fairly simple solution: get the single tooth trigger wheel from just about any non-JDM (North America, Europe, etc...4AG) between 83-89. They usually used Air Flow Meters rather than MAP for load data.
(Toyota 4AG 4-wire VAST Distributor)
Using your favorite small gear puller, remove the 4-tooth trigger wheel from your ESA distributor shaft (if your sweet little compact gear puller allows, you can do this without removing the shaft assembly from the distributor - mine was already missing the driven gear so it was easy either way for me):
(Take note of how the 4 teeth line-up BETWEEN the teeth on the 24-tooth wheel)
(I love this gear puller)
After pulling the 4-tooth wheel from your JDM ESA shaft, do the same with the 1-tooth wheel from your donor VAST distributor shaft and you should end up with this:
While making sure your single-tooth is lined up between 2 teeth on the 24 tooth shaft, press it on. It will only go so far but don't get too zealous with it - with just your luck you're liable to break something.
If you succeeded in doing this little "switch-a-roo" with everything still in the distributor then all you have to do is cap it off with a fancy, shmancy cap-off from OCCAMOTIF.
Yours truly,
Jonas
